REN Alcohol, also known as rectified spirits, neutral spirits or rectified alcohol or rectified ethanol, is a high-strength, purified form of alcohol that is produced through a process of repeated distillation and rectification. Rectification involves the repeated distillation of a fermented liquid or mash, which separates the alcohol from other compounds, resulting in a purer and more concentrated alcohol
Rectified spirit alcohol typically contains a high percentage of ethanol, often 95% or higher, and is used primarily for industrial and commercial purposes, such as in the production of alcoholic beverages, pharmaceuticals, and perfumes. When produced using conventional distillation processes, rectified spirit has a practical concentration limit of 97.2% ABV. It is important to note that rectified spirit alcohol is not intended for human consumption and is often subject to government regulation and control.
Extra neutral alcohol (ENA) is purified ethyl alcohol that has been finely distilled so that it has no traceable smell, contains little or no additives, and has none of the impurities sometimes found in rectified spirits.
ENA can also be denatured to make it unfit for human consumption. While the high alcohol proof still makes rectified spirits dangerous to drink, they are used more commonly in various alcoholic drinks and medicinal tinctures.

REN alcohol is an industrial, or second-grade, fermentation ethyl alcohol. As a result, it is mainly used in industrial applications, such as industrial and household solvents, cleaning products, vehicle windscreen wash and burning alcohol. However, it can also be found, for example, in alcohol vinegar and spiritus. Spiritus is a widely used medical alcohol and ‘spiritus fortis’ is actually a medical term for 95% proof ethanol.
Rectified alcohol is used in many spirits, including blended whiskies, brandy, gins, liqueurs and bitters. As a consumer product, it is mixed with other beverages to create cocktails, which tend to be seen as a substitute for rum or vodka. People also use it as an ingredient in homemade liqueurs like cassis or limoncello. In cooking, REN alcohol’s high alcoholic concentration makes it an ideal solvent for bringing out flavours in other ingredients.
