Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol, is a type of alcohol that is produced through the fermentation of sugars found in various plant materials. It is a clear, colourless liquid and is commonly used in the food & beverage industry, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, industrial and electronics.
Ethanol is primarily produced through a process called fermentation. This involves the conversion of sugars, such as those found in crops like sugarcane, sugarbeets, grains or fruits, into ethanol and carbon dioxide. The fermentation process is carried out by yeast or bacteria in the absence of oxygen. Once fermentation is complete, the resulting mixture is distilled to separate and concentrate the ethanol.
Distillation is a process used to separate a mixture of liquids based on the differences in their boiling points. It relies on the principle that when a liquid is heated, the component with the lower boiling point vaporises first, while the component with the higher boiling point remains in its liquid state.
Nedstar works with various ethanol producers from all over the world. Depending on your wishes regarding raw material origin, industry, and country of delivery, we can find the most suitable country of sourcing for you.

One of the most significant sustainability benefits of ethanol is that it is a renewable resource. Ethanol is produced by fermenting and distilling crops such as grains, sugarcane, sugarbeet and fruits. These crops can be grown and harvested year on year, providing a sustainable source of ethanol that doesn't deplete the planet's finite resources. Moreover, various waste products of ethanol production can be used in sustainable agricultural practices. Examples include animal feed and fertiliser.
At Nedstar, we try to do what is best for the planet and its people by sourcing responsibly. We aim to work with partners who share our values and belief in creating a fairer, more sustainable world. Our ethanol is made largely from a residual stream from the sugar industry and our suppliers are carefully selected based on strict sustainability criteria. Nedstar offsets significantly more CO2 than its impact through the initiative Tree Nation, being the only ethanol supplier to do so in this way.
Nedstar aims to contribute to a cleaner and better world. We take our corporate social responsibility (CSR) seriously and want to make a positive impact environmentally, socially and economically. We have therefore committed ourselves to various CSR initiatives relevant to our relationships with suppliers, customers and the planet. You can read more about it on our CSR page.
