What is rye alcohol?

Rye alcohol belongs to the group of neutral grain spirits (GNS). Made out of high-quality rye, a raw material with high starch content, ethanol distilled from this grain is known to create very pure, clear, and neutral alcohol. With its alcohol content of > 96%/192 proof, it is a great neutral spirit for various food and industrial applications.

How is rye alcohol produced?

After carefully selecting and cleaning the rye, the grains are mixed with water and heated in a process called mashing. This converts the starch into sugars which are then fermented with the addition of yeast. After a few days, the mix becomes beer, so-called ‘wash’, with a low alcohol content of around 10% ABV / 20 proof. Finally, the wash is distilled to remove the majority of water, creating a solution that, with further distillation cycles, becomes mainly ethanol.

Rye, as well as other grains like wheat and barley, are especially efficient in yielding many litres of ethanol with a smaller amount of grains used. Due to its purity, it also requires fewer distillation cycles, meaning faster and more energy-efficient production.

Applications of neutral rye spirit

Rye alcohol is a popular ethanol product in both food and non-food sectors. Although the majority of rye is grown in Europe, it is a very popular raw material in the United States due to the production of rye whiskey. Other popular spirits that utilise rye are vodka and gin.

Outside of the spirits industry, rye alcohol is used in many industrial and commercial applications such as cosmetics, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. Organic rye spirit is often preferred due to consumers’ growing awareness of and preference for environmentally friendly products.

Denaturants

If you require high-quality rye alcohol for non-food applications, we can denature it for you. By mixing the ethanol product with another chemical, it becomes unfit for human consumption, meaning that it is exempt from excise duty. You can choose from a variety of denaturing agents that fit your regional regulations such as DEPMEKBitrexIPA or Euro Denatured.
