What is the difference between first- and second-generation bioethanol?
First-generation bioethanol is produced from food crops such as sugarcane, corn, or wheat, materials rich in starch or sugar. In contrast, second-generation (2G) bioethanol is made from non-food biomass or waste materials like agricultural residues, wood chips, or coffee grounds. This innovation reduces competition with food production, lowers waste, and minimises the environmental footprint of biofuel production.
Why is bioethanol considered a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels?
Bioethanol is renewable, biodegradable, and significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. Because it’s made from biomass that absorbs CO₂ during growth, its overall carbon footprint is much lower. Additionally, bioethanol production supports circular economy models by turning agricultural or industrial waste into valuable energy, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy system.

Sustainability
Are your products organic?
Nedstar supports the use of organic ethanol in every market sector. All of our bulk spirits and ethanol products can be purchased with EU organic or USDA organic certification.
Is ethanol production environmentally friendly?
One of the most significant sustainability benefits of ethanol is that it is a renewable resource. Ethanol is produced by fermenting and distilling crops such as grains, sugarcane, sugar beet and fruits. These crops can be grown and harvested year on year, providing a sustainable source of ethanol that doesn't deplete the planet's finite resources. Moreover, various waste products of ethanol production can be used in sustainable agricultural practices, such as animal feed and fertiliser.
What does Nedstar do to be more sustainable?
At Nedstar, we try to do what is best for the planet and its people by sourcing responsibly. We aim to work with partners who share our values and belief in creating a fairer, more sustainable world. Our ethanol is made largely from a residual stream from the sugar industry and our suppliers are carefully selected based on strict sustainability criteria. Nedstar offsets significantly more CO2 than its impact through the initiative Tree Nation, being the only ethanol supplier to achieve this.
What sustainability certifications does Nedstar hold?
Nedstar is proud to be ISO 14001 certified, the leading international standard for environmental management systems. This means we actively monitor and reduce our environmental impact across all operations. We’ve also been awarded a Silver Medal by EcoVadis, placing us in the top 10% of all companies assessed globally for environmental, social, and ethical performance.
Does Nedstar offer sustainable ethanol products?
Yes. Our product portfolio includes sustainable options like fusel oil (a by-product of alcohol production often used in circular applications) and 2nd-generation (2G) ethanol made from agricultural waste such as coffee husks. These products support clients looking to reduce their carbon footprint or meet ambitious sustainability goals.
What are the CSR initiatives Nedstar supports?
Nedstar aims to contribute to a cleaner and better world. We take our corporate social responsibility (CSR) seriously and want to make a positive impact environmentally, socially and economically. We have therefore committed ourselves to two CSR initiatives relevant to our relationships with suppliers, customers and the planet: Tree Nation and The Green Intelligence. You can read more about it on our CSR page.
