What is rye whiskey?

Rye whiskey is a spirit crafted predominantly from rye grain. There are two types, the American and the Canadian. The most famous one is the American, and it stands out thanks to its unique composition, requiring a minimum of 51% rye in the mash. As for the Canadian type, it consists of a mix of different grains, and it doesn't need a specific amount of rye, but it must be aged for at least 3 years.

Flavour profile

The distinguishing robust taste of American rye alcohol from other types of whiskey comes from the process of ageing in new charred oak barrels. Its spiciness comes from the high quantity of rye present in the mash, which adds other notes like peppery, cinnamon, and clove-like. Whereas Canadian rye whisky, aged in a mix of used and new barrels, results in tones of caramel, nuts, and cinnamon.

Though usually mistaken for bourbon, American rye whiskey differs in its ingredients: legally, in the US, it needs to have at least 51% rye on its mash, with the remainder typically being corn and malted barley. On the other hand, bourbon needs at least 51% corn. While rye includes spicy and fruity notes, bourbon remains sweet, with notes of caramel and vanilla.

Chill filtration

Nedstar also offers chill filtration, a process for refining spirits, allowing them to be diluted down to a lower alcoholic percentage and a smoother taste while maintaining quality.

Chill filtration involves lowering the temperature of the spirit to encourage the removal of unwanted particles, resulting in a softer and more consistent product, without compromising on taste or quality.
