What is anhydrous ethanol?
Anhydrous ethanol, known by various names such as absolute alcohol, ethanol 199 proof/200 proof, or 99 ethanol alcohol, represents the highest purity level in alcohol. The term "pure" is here defined as alcohol with a minimum of 99.5% alcohol and a maximum of a few parts per million water content, as anhydrous means ‘containing no water’.

How is anhydrous alcohol made?
Standard alcohol is produced by distillation, creating a solution of about 95% alcohol and 5% water. To achieve pure ethyl alcohol, all water must be removed through azeotropic distillation.
This process adds a third component, such as benzene or turpentine, to separate the ethanol and water, resulting in pure ethanol with trace amounts of the separation agent. Alternatively, synthetic methods can produce anhydrous ethanol with 99% purity.
Anhydrous ethanol uses
Anhydrous ethanol is commonly used as a cleaner and solvent in laboratories and specialised industries contexts, where water reacting with other chemicals present would be a problem
An example would be the electronics industry, where sensitive equipment may be seriously damaged by coming into contact with water.
Other anhydrous alcohol uses range from fuel manufacture, where low water content is also crucial, to a solvent in lacquers, where the lack of moisture makes the lacquer harder and clearer.
Synthetic anhydrous ethanol is often used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, though nowadays some cosmetics companies avoid using synthetic alcohol as part of their wider commitment to using only natural products.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is anhydrous ethanol and how does it differ from standard ethanol?
Anhydrous ethanol is a high-purity ethanol containing less than 1% water (typically 99.9% pure). It differs from standard ethanol, also called hydrous ethanol, by undergoing additional dehydration to remove residual moisture. This makes it ideal for industrial, cosmetic, and fuel applications that require water-free alcohol.
What are the main industrial uses of anhydrous ethanol?
Anhydrous ethanol is widely used across non-food industries, including:
-
Cosmetics & Personal Care: as a solvent or carrier in perfumes, deodorants, and hand sanitisers.
-
Cleaning & Disinfection: for industrial cleaning solutions and surface disinfectants.
-
Pharmaceuticals: as a solvent in formulations.
-
Fuel & Energy: as a biofuel additive or gasoline oxygenate to improve combustion efficiency.
-
Industrial Applications: including paints, inks, coatings, and aerosols.
Can I use anhydrous ethanol for pharmaceutical or cosmetic applications?
Yes. Nedstar’s anhydrous ethanol is suitable for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and personal care formulations, provided the purity and certification meet your specific standards. We can supply documentation and test reports to verify compliance with GMP, IFRA, or cosmetic-grade requirements.
How does the low water content benefit specific industries?
The nearly water-free composition of anhydrous ethanol ensures improved solubility, stability, and performance in applications where moisture can cause degradation, such as in electronics cleaning, fuel blending, lacquers, and coatings. Its dryness also reduces corrosion and contamination risks.
What sustainability and traceability measures does Nedstar apply?
Nedstar is committed to sustainable and transparent ethanol sourcing. We work with certified suppliers, promote non-GMO and renewable origins, and integrate sustainability reporting through projects like Green Intelligence, supporting reforestation and education in producing regions.
