What is REN Alcohol?

REN Alcohol, also known as rectified or neutral spirit, is a highly purified form of ethanol produced through repeated distillation and rectification.

Containing around 95–97.2% alcohol by volume, it’s mainly used for industrial and commercial applications such as beverages, pharmaceuticals, and perfumes. It’s not intended for direct consumption and is regulated by law.

What’s the difference between extra-neutral alcohol and REN alcohol?

Extra neutral alcohol (ENA) is purified ethyl alcohol that has been finely distilled so that it has no traceable smell, contains little or no additives, and has none of the impurities sometimes found in rectified spirits.

ENA can also be denatured to make it unfit for human consumption. While the high alcohol proof still makes rectified spirits dangerous to drink, they are used more commonly in various alcoholic drinks and medicinal tinctures.

Uses for REN Alcohol

Commonly used in industrial applications, including solvents and cleaning products, vehicle windscreen wash, burning alcohol and fuel additives.

Found in household and medical products, such as alcohol vinegar, Spiritus and spiritus fortis (95% ethanol used for disinfection)

Used in food & beverage applications, including blended whiskies, brandy, gin, liqueurs, and bitters, cocktail bases or homemade liqueurs like limoncello, and flavour solvent
