What is bourbon?

Bourbon is a type of whiskey produced in the United States. It differentiates from other types of whiskey by its mash, made predominantly of corn, with 51% being the minimum amount needed. Additionally, straight bourbon must be aged for at least 2 years in new, charred oak barrels, giving it its distinctive flavour profile and amber colour. This unique production process, along with stringent regulations, ensures that Bourbon maintains its high quality and distinct character, setting it apart from other whiskeys.

Bourbon flavour profile

Bourbon offers a diverse and rich flavour profile that varies depending on its specific mash bill and production methods. Traditional straight bourbon, made predominantly from corn (at least 51%), with the remainder typically barley and a small proportion of rye or wheat, delivers a sweet and full-bodied taste with notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak. Wheated bourbon, which substitutes wheat for rye, provides a smoother, softer mouthfeel, featuring flavours of honey, toffee, and butterscotch.

High rye bourbon, with its higher rye content, introduces a spicier character, offering bold, peppery notes balanced with the classic sweetness of corn. High malt bourbon, also known as Tennessee high malt, incorporates a higher percentage of malted barley, resulting in a complex, malt-forward profile with rich, nutty, and toasty flavours.
